What Does Strategic HR Really Mean and How Do I Get There?

We often hear of executives within corporate America asking for Human Resources to “be more strategic”. The HR profession itself has been shifting its paradigm to becoming “strategic business partners” and away from the HR Compliance Cops.  But what exactly does it mean to be strategic and how do we actually achieve the ranks of “being strategic” with so many tactical deliverables consuming our days.  Ultimately, how do we make the shift from an HR leader to a Business Leader who knows HR?

During this panel discussion of Senior Human Resource leaders, you will learn:

  • Expectations C-suite and Board of Directors want to see from their HR departments
  • What truly defines “strategic HR”
  • Examples of how being strategic has made a difference in the business
  • Attributes and competences to gain in order to become strategic

This incredible panel will be moderated and there will be a segment for specific Q&A from our audience.

Panel:

  • MG Kristian - Mitchell International - MG Kristian is the Senior Vice President of People & Workplace at Mitchell International.  MG joined Mitchell in 2010, leading the Talent Management and Change Management processes and initiatives.  She later assumed responsibility for the Talent Acquisition, Compensation and Payroll functions. Prior to joining Mitchell, MG was Vice President of Human Resources at Life Technologies serving in HR Business Partner, Talent Acquisition and M&A Integration leadership roles.  Before that, MG held Human Resource leadership positions at Dell, Inc. and PepsiCo.  MG’s passion is creating environments where employees can do their best work on behalf of customers, the company and each other. To that end, her leadership contributed to Mitchell winning the 2017 Athena Company of the Year Award and grand prize for Workplace Excellence among San Diego companies in 2012.  She also was recognized as an award winner in the prestigious San Diego Women who Mean Business Competition in 2011.  MG currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Second Chance Program in San Diego.  She earned a Bachelor of Liberal Studies from Pace University.
  • Angelica Gamble Wong - Rubio's Coastal Grill -  Angelica Gamble-Wong joined Rubio’s Restaurants in 2011 as a Vice President, and is currently serving as their Sr. Vice President of People Services.  Throughout her human resources experience, Angelica has led the human resources function in startup, fast growth and turnaround environments.  Her experience has spanned a variety of industries including manufacturing, production, finance, and hospitality. Angelica earned her bachelor’s degree in social ecology from the University of California, Irvine, where she graduated cum laude.  She received her MBA from the University of California, Los Angeles.  She has spoken to business leaders about the importance and benefits of strategic human resources as a competitive advantage, and is known for her business oriented approach.  She has been published on various topics including responding to the economy’s impact on learning and development resources, and developing HR business strategies which evolve and adapt to new business environments. Currently Angelica is waging the battle of trying to find balance between the job she loves, her amazing family, and a largely neglected gym membership.  When she’s not wrapped up in all things HR, she’s wrapped up in the arms of her three kids, two dogs and a husband who knows when it’s time to greet her at the door with a glass of wine.
