    The Human Resources team at California Western School of Law is building and expanding its capabilities and we are seeking a highly skilled, business-minded, experienced HR practitioner and leader for a VP-level role. 

    The Vice President of Human Resources will serve as a credible, trusted advisor to provide solutions and recommendations to enhance operational effectiveness.  She/he will support the execution of business strategies through the implementation of HR strategies and solutions that support short and long-term business objectives. 

    We seek an individual with an “above the trees” perspective who can draw upon their professional breadth and depth, as well as their ability to influence and inspire to measurably contribute and accelerate the achievement of our business objectives.

    Position Summary:

    Reporting to the President/Dean, the Vice President of Human Resources is responsible for overall strategic human resource leadership to California Western School of Law. 

    Essential Functions:

    • Supervise and manage overall operations of the Human Resources department.
    • In collaboration with the President/Dean, promote a culture of accountability and drive business results through the implementation of effective performance management systems, measures and rewards.
    • Manage and provide guidance and counsel on employee recruitment, selection, employment, classification, compensation, evaluation, retention, discipline, discharge, and labor law compliance.
    • Develop, manage and administer benefit programs.
    • Work closely with department heads to develop and implement processes to identify competency, knowledge and talent gaps and departmental needs.
    • Create and supervise the Law School’s training and development programs relating to all employment and organizational development issues.
    • Provide leadership and expertise in evaluating current human resources practices and make recommendations for improvement in policies and procedures.
    • Develop, recommend, implement and interpret policies and programs regarding compliance with Wage and Hour Laws and all other State and Federal regulations.
    • Work closely with department heads to clarify job descriptions, duties and classifications of employees.
    • Supervise two direct reports.
    • Propose, prepare and manage Human Resources Department budget of $1 million.
    • Manage and administer Workers’ Compensation, including all reporting, negotiations, statistical analysis, audits, and compliance issues.
    • Manage and provide guidance for Law School’s employee labor relations issues.
    • Create, interpret, review, recommend and maintain manuals, forms and documents relating to human resources, including, but not limited to, Employee Handbook, Supervisor’s Manual, Workers’ Compensation policies and procedures, Human Resources policies and procedures, and Leave policies and procedures.
    • Select and coordinate use of Human Resources consultants, insurance brokers, insurance carriers, pension administrators, training specialists, labor counsel, and other outside sources.
    • Act as Advisor to the Planning Activities Committee.

    Position Qualifications:

    • A college degree is required or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
    • A minimum of ten years’ experience gained through increasingly responsible management positions in Human Resources with eight years in a high-level administrative position including significant managerial responsibility and demonstrated strong leadership skills. 
    • Experience in higher education highly desired. 
    • Certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources is a plus.
    • Individual must be a self-starter and demonstrate a sound work ethic.
    • Requires a firm commitment to providing exemplary services in a demanding and challenging environment.  
    • Individual must be motivated, highly organized, and self-directed with excellent interpersonal skills who can effectively multitask and handle a variety of matters independently in a professional, polished, and mature manner with tact, diplomacy, and appropriate judgment.
    • Attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy is crucial.
